What to plant in July

Until I get some more time to develop the Website, here is a simple list of what to plant in July.

Temperatures in July are brutal, they start off the month at an average of 104, and a low of 88 and don’t give up for the entire month.  Any given day in July has been known to get above 115 degrees.  We need some heat loving plants to weather this mess.  While you are out there, keep yourself and your plants safe.

You will see some suggestions to plant at the end of the month, this is because we usually hope for monsoonal moisture to come to the valley in July and August.  When that comes it helps to create a more suitable environment for some plants.

Without Further Ado, here’s the list:

  • Amaranth – probably the last chance to plant this for the year.
  • Beans, Black-Eyed Peas – also known as Cow Peas.
  • Beans, Lima
  • Beans, Pinto
  • Beans, Snake Beans – also called Yard long beans.
  • Corn
  • Cucumbers – Probably best planted toward the end of the month, August is better.
  • Cucumbers, Armenian – Most likely the last chance to plant these for the year.
  • Cantaloupe – This will be your last chance to plant this year.
  • Okra – Better to wait until the end of the month
  • Peppers – These always seem to do best from Transplants
  • Pumpkin
  • Squash, Winter
  • Sunflowers
  • Tomatillos – Again, transplants only, please.
  • Tomatoes – These can be planted as transplants towards the end of the month, but I suggest waiting for August.

July (and all of the Phoenix summer) is a difficult time to garden in the Valley of the Sun. However, if you can stick to the above list of what to plant in July, you will have much more success as the summer progresses. Good Luck, Get out there and Garden!
